The Shadow Legion is gaming group that was established by Justin ”Beowulf” West in 1997. Originally created to be an on-line gaming group with chapters spreading amongst the most popular on-line games of the time (Mechwarrior4, Rainbow 6, etc), eventually the group spread to both Airsoft and Paintball. Online the Legion was known for acting as the hired guns larger gaming groups who did not want to get their hands dirty, but still wanted their enemies to suffer and lose the will to fight. The Legion was so efficient at these jobs that even the groups who hired us were afraid of our actions… to the point that they tried to eradicate the Legion. Time moves on…members begin families, change jobs, etc. But always if there is still a slight ember a blaze can be ignited. For nearly 10 years only a few of the original Shadow Legion remained and continue the fight. In 2007 Justin “Beowulf” West and Armando “The Dirty” Sanchez are recruited by the paintball team 4th Georgia Regiment, a 24hr scenario group. When they joined the 4th consisted of a rag tag group of maybe 10 members. After a few events Beowulf, The Dirty, and Tony “Grey wolf” Sellers completely reorganized the Regiment from the ground up (created a rank structure, added companies, and made the Regiment 50+ players strong). Beowulf and the Dirty were made the commanders of Delta Company. Beowulf molded Delta Company into the image of what the Shadow Legion once was…a special operations group designed to strike fear into the enemy. For 4 years Delta Company, which consisted mostly of Law Enforcement and Military, was in charge of training the 4th into a more efficient fighting force. During this we acted as advisers and even Op4 during training scenarios. And like always with specialization and success comes animosity. During training scenarios 2-3 companies would work out arrangements and begin to hunt down Delta Company. These matches were often hard fights, but Delta would prevail with speed and violence of action. Delta Company has represented the 4th in all of it’s major engagements abroad at many different scenarios, winning many awards and prizes. When people saw the 4th they were actually seeing Delta Company. And now with unrest growing within the 4th it was time for Delta Company’s members and loyalists from the other companies to split off, forge our way, and breath life back into the shadows…
LONG LIVE THE SHADOW LEGION!
The Shadow Legion rank structure is very simple in order to keep us as fluid as possible both on and off the battlefield. The Commander who is in charge both on, off the field, and is the final word on rulings. Commanders place Legionnaires in charge of specific duties: Research & Development, Webmaster, Logistics, Training Coordinator, etc. The Commander may also appoint Legionnaires to specific tasks on a case-by-case scenario. Field leadership falls to the responsibility of every Legionnaire. All Legionnaires are expected to be leaders to our own forces and to friendly forces not of the Shadow Legion, as players will often look up to you for advice. Generally speaking the Commander is in charge on the field and will be the one barking out the orders, however if he or she is not there and if everyone is a “leader” what are you supposed to do? The Legion accepted you into our ranks for a reason…you either have the gumption to stand up and lead your fellow Legionnaires without the blink of an eye or follow another senior Legionnaire’s commands because you know/trust his judgments.
Veteran Legionnaire, is a member who has been with Legion since the beginning and who has either proved his or herself thru countless engagements or has proved themselves in some other way that the Commander/other Veterans have deemed worthy. These members should be a force to be reckoned with and they are the example, which all Initiates should inspire to be. Veteran Legionnaires are easily recognized by the Death’s head skull painted onto their ‘mechs. Veteran Legionnaires have the added responsibility of being in command of their own lance (4-Mech Team).
Legionnaire, the name is not just a title or a rank…it’s a word that speaks to the multitude of our ranks. You are an efficient instrument of neither evil nor good, a shadow, the shape in the darkness disregarded as a figment of the enemy’s frightful mind, trained to sew discord, chaos, and terror in the enemy ranks at your mere sight. A player obtains the status of Legionnaire after he or she has proved themselves thru a series of trials and has finally been voted in by the elder members of the team. Family members of Legionnaires are automatically part of the Legion, however it is encouraged that these members do eventually take the trials.
Initiate, a person who has either been asked to join or who has sought out the Shadow Legion. These are players who have not passed all of their challenges. An Initiate is not unlike a Squire of medieval times; you will be required to assist Legionnaires with any of their daily duties (prepping gear, loading weapons, cleaning equipment, etc). While an Initiate you will still be used for missions and daily combat operations. It may seem tedious now, but respect is earned.
Each Chapter will consist of no more 30 members not including their families and will be responsible for their own governing outside of order from the 1st Chapter Commander. If a Chapter reaches 30 + members it’s Commander will choose a Legionnaire to promote to Commander and place in charge of a new Chapter. Rules/Ranks apply across chapters, in other words if a Legionnaire from 2nd Chapter tells an Initiate from 1st Chapter to assist him with something he will be expected to comply as long as it does not contradict an order from another higher ranking Chapter member. New Chapters may be formed around smaller teams wishing to merge with the Legion provided elder members from the 1st Chapter and the Commander agree upon it.
Champion of the Legion, is member who has accomplished a great feat by his or herself. Whether it was completing a solo suicide mission, single-handedly eliminating an enemy team, etc. A Commander can only award this title. Champions are easily recognized by a vertical red stripe on their masks thru their left eye. Can a Veteran Legionnaire be named Champion? Yes and this Legionnaire will display both the stripe and or the skull paint. *Note, both of these title markings can be removed or covered up depending on mission specifics/camouflage concerns.
5) Trial of membership
The "Trial" will consist of testing a Warrior's skill in the heat of combat. In order for us to determine the metal of a warrior, they are put into a pit and tested in combat against Veteran Legionnaires. The "Trial" consists of the Initiate choosing the mech of his or her choice and then will face Three Veteran Legionnaires consisting of the following order and weight class:
1st Veteran Legionnaire - Light Class mech.
2nd Veteran Legionnaire - Medium Class Mech
3rd Veteran Legionnaire - Heavy Class Mech
The "Trial" will be setup in a private match and then conducted with whomever wishes to observe. During the "Trial" all members will be silent and allow the Senior Member to conduct the "Trial".
The map that this "Trial" will always take place is on Tourmaline. This will test the Initiates ability to manage heat and movement on the battlefield.
The "Pit" will be designated by its borders by the most senior ranking member of Shadow Legion at that current moment. These borders will not be crossed and if crossed the "Trial" will be restarted.
The Initiate will then face each pilot one at time. At no time will the Initiate repair, change, and/or replace his or her mech after it is choosen.
The "Trial" is concluded when the Initiate's mech is terminated or the Initiate terminates all opposing mechs.
This is not a pass or fail, but a test of the Initiates abilities in combat, and to see what areas need improvement.
6) Rules Respect your fellow Legionnaires.
Respect your family and the family of fellow Legionnaires, for they are your family now too. (Family comes first, always) Do not underestimate your enemy. A lack of respect for your enemy sets you up for eventual defeat. Do not dishonor yourself or the Legion. Keep your battlemech prepared , ready for the fight, and ensure your fellow Legionnaire’s battlemechs are ready for the fight. Mercy is not a luxury we can afford. Eliminate your target swiftly, unless delaying his demise will serve to frighten his team. Encourage friendly and enemy players when applicable. We want people to keep the game alive. Ensure that your target is eliminated.
